Carole Cadwalladr ordered to pay £2m in legal costs from banks – Guido Fawkes

The Court of Appeal has ordered that Carole Cadwalladr must pay 60% of Arron Banks’ legal fees in the amount of £1,242,634 £2m* Having apologized and paid out £35,000 in damages, the court ruled today that it must now find another couple of million on the back of the sofa before the end of the month. Beyond that, and interest begins to accrue at “2% per annum above the Bank of England base rate from time to time”…

The Court said:

“Claimant was the winning party on the appeal and overall. It has established that Respondent was responsible for the unlawful publication to 100,000 or more people in this jurisdiction of a serious allegation, which caused serious damage to Claimant’s reputation, which Respondent accepts was not true, and that (as she also accepted on appeal) was no longer defensible in the public interest. He has established a right to substantial compensation, now agreed in the sum of £35,000. She also obtained an apology, an acknowledgment of the falsity of the denounced meaning, the modification of the TED talk, the commitment not to repeat the denounced accusation and the elimination of some tweets… ”.

Banks tells Guido “victory is final and sweet“. Presumably, the mainstream media will cover the news this time…

*Upon reading the order of costs more closely we notice another “£800,000 which the Claimant was ordered to pay in respect of the costs of the proceedings before the High Court. “
