Liverpool transfer swoop as £50m ‘target’ Jurgen Klopp keen to sign for rivals Newcastle
Liverpool have made an exciting start to their summer recruitment campaign, but there is also a growing sense of what could have been for Jurgen Klopp after the market officially opened.
Despite shelving initial plans to target England sensation Jude Bellingham – due to the financial cost involved – the Reds have got the ball rolling as they look to revamp their midfield plan. Argentine playmaker Alexis McAllister is through the door and it could only be a matter of time before the 24-year-old is tracked down.
His arrival for an undisclosed fee even predates the Premier League window. However, as this particular stage and the countdown to next season passed, there was a rather remarkable development elsewhere.
After seeing Bellingham complete his not-so-secret move to Real Madrid for an initial £88m plus add-ons, it was St James’ Park and Newcastle United who took center stage on Wednesday afternoon as the shock reports came to the fore. Nicolo Barella – the midfielder Klopp loves – is on his way to the North East in an eye-watering £50m deal.
The return on assists from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson has been remarkable since this tactical plan was fully unleashed from the 2018/2019 season onwards. The England defender has scored 68 goals in the last five seasons, with the Scotland captain registering 58 assists in the same period.
