Paddington’s win moved Aidan O’Brien ahead of Sir Michael Stout in the all-time Royal Ascot trainers’ rankings
Paddington won the Prince of Wales Stakes to give trainer Aidan O’Brien a record 83rd victory at Royal Ascot.
The Irish 2000 Guineas winner under Ryan Moore beat Frankie’s English Guineas winner Dettori Halday.
Dettori later received a nine-day ban for careless riding when he finished fifth on the royal horse Saga.
Meanwhile, Holly Doyle became the first woman to ride a top-level Group One winner at Royal Ascot as Bradsell took the King’s Stand Stakes.
Doyle survived a stewards inquiry after the 14-1 winner drifted left to runner-up Highfield Princess.
The Kevin Ryan-trained Triple Time made a 33-1 shot under Neil Callan to win the maiden Queen Anne Stakes.
Inspiral returned to second on a disappointing day for the 52-year-old Italian Dettori, who is riding in his final Royal Ascot before retiring later this year.
Moore led the jockeys with a treble sealed by Vauban after an earlier victory at the River Tiber.
This is the first Royal Ascot since the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September, and King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended for the first time in their new roles.
They own several entries in the five-day match, although Saga was only fifth to Dettori in the Wolferton Stakes as a 16-1 chance royal champion, trained by Roger Varian, gave jockey Jack Mitchell his first win at Royal Ascot.
Dettori has been handed a suspension that will run from July 4 to 12, meaning he misses the race with favorite Emily Upjohn in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes.
He is believed to have caused significant interference to several horses after attempting to switch right to the rail in the early stages.
Chaldean was 7-4 favorite in the feature race on day one, but it was 11-5 shot Paddington who came out on top by three and three-quarter lengths.
“He’s an amazing horse, he just keeps getting better and better,” O’Brien said of Paddington.
It was a second triumph of the day for O’Brien, who had earlier won the Coventry Stakes for the 10th time with Tiber River, and is now one Ascot win ahead of Sir Michael Stout.

Doyle, who was claiming her fourth winner at the Royals, said it was “heartbreaking” to hear the stewards’ horn.
But they ran last year’s Coventry Stakes winner Bradsell, who won by three-quarters of a length, should continue in the race, although second-placed rider Jason Hart said he felt “intimidated” by the winner.
It was sweet success for trainer Archie Watson, who had to suffer the loss of Dragon Symbol from the 2021 Commonwealth Cup after an enquiry.
Triple time had missed the Lockinge Stakes with colic but justified his stable’s faith by decisively dispatching the challenge of Inspital, ridden by Dettori.
“Kevin was so confident. He said it was the best horse he had ever trained,” Callen said.
Owner Sheikh Mohammed Obeid celebrated again later as Royal Champion scored a brace.
On her last start, a pregnant mare Ahorsewithnoname provided the mother of all victories for jockey William Buick and trainer Nicky Henderson.
The eight-year-old, who is by sire Cracksman, came home ahead of Calling The Wind to take the Ascot Stakes.
Vauban led Willie Mullins 1-2 in the final Copper Horse Handicap.
The leveling favorite completed Moore’s treble while Dettori – aboard Absurde – finished second for the third time.
