Monday was such a slow news day that I posted about it on Carty Free’s Twitter, asking Tottenham to “do something”. Well, this monkey’s paw sure is curved. In addition to (waves to everything)now we have this latest news from our good friend Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur have made a breakthrough in their talks with Leicester City for the transfer of James Maddison, reaching a verbal agreement for around £40 million.

We thought it would happen pretty quickly, but I didn’t expect it to happen THIS quickly. And £40m is a far more acceptable price for a player at the top of a relegation team with a year left on his contract than the £60m Leicester wanted. But this is already a matter of negotiation. It has been suggested that Spurs will pay a significant percentage of that fee up front, possibly at the insistence of Leicester, although we will have to wait for further reports before we know for sure.
Spurs have already completed the transfers of Dejan Kulushevski and, as of today, of the new starting goalkeeper Guglielmo Vacario. Maddison will be the third signing of the window, and it’s still only June.
I’ve been a Tottenham fan for a long time and I’m still not used to this new thing where Spurs come out and identify themselves – and then sign – players at the beginning of the window. It feels weird… but good! Ange Postecoglou will target several of his top targets before the players report for pre-season training at the start of July, although there is still plenty of work to be done.
Spurs are currently in talks with Bayer Leverkusen for CB Edmond Tapsoba and depending on what happens with Harry Kane, they could also have another striker. But it’s a good start.
