RMT members have said they will strike again on June 2 in a longstanding dispute over wages, jobs and working conditions.
The strike will cause 20,000 train managers, caterers and station staff to walk off the job.
It means there will be three rail strikes within four days with Aslef train drivers leaving on May 31 and June 3, the day of the FA Cup final.
It is likely to cause disruption for many during the school half term break.
The RMT said the rail companies had not submitted new proposals since the union’s last strike on May 13.
General Secretary Mick Lynch said the government was not allowing the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) to make an improved offer in the national dispute.
Industry dealmakers were “shocked” when the RMT rejected their latest offer in April. There was a war of words over whether the RDG had backed down from its proposals, which it strongly denied.
On Thursday, the group of rail companies said it was still standing by its “fair” proposal, saying RMT management had chosen to “prolong this dispute without giving its members a chance to weigh in on their own offer.” .
Aslef’s strikes are now more disruptive than RMT’s, because the resolution of the separate Network Rail dispute in March means signaling staff are no longer involved.
However, RMT members have backed strike action potentially in the fall.
The government and industry argue that the railway is financially unsustainable and that labor practices must change to allow for a wage increase.
Unions argue that jobs and conditions are under attack and that wage increases on the table are well below inflation.
“Ministers can’t just wish this dispute would go away,” said RMT’s Mick Lynch.
