Celebrity chef John Mountain has banned vegans from his restaurant after receiving a bad review.
John Mountain, a UK chef who owns Fyre restaurant, said he decided to ban vegans from his restaurant for “mental reasons”.
“Unfortunately all vegans are now banned from Fyre (for mental health reasons),” he sad in a Facebook post. “Thank you for the understanding. Xx.”
It was also shared alongside the caption, “Yes. I’m done.”
The restaurant, based in Perth, Australia, is understood to have been given a bad review by a vegan customer who contacted it before the visit to check if they served vegan food.
Chef Mountain promised he would take care of her dietary requirements, but he forgot his promise when the day of her visit
“A young girl contacted me and said she was coming to the restaurant … and asked if there were any vegan options,” he told PerthNow.
“That was my only downside… I said I’d accommodate her, I said we had gnocchi, vegetables… and that was it.”
“Saturday came around and unfortunately I had forgotten… I had a private party to attend to,” he explained to the store.
He also said his sous chef was upset that he “didn’t tell them about the vegan customer”.
But the next day, the vegan customer took to Facebook to make a “personal” complaint about her experience.
“I think it’s extremely important these days that restaurants can accommodate everyone, and not being able to have real plant-based dishes shows your shortcomings as a chef,” she said.
“I hope to see some improvements to your menu as I have lived in Connelly for quite some time and have seen many restaurants come and go from this building and none of them are the last.
“If you don’t deal with the weather, I don’t believe your restaurant will be the one that does.”
Angered by her response, Chef Mountain said she made the complaint “personal” and even hit back at the complainant.
He said: “Thanks for your negative review… please feel free to share your f***ing experience and I look forward to seeing you again. How very childish.
“You and all your vegan friends can go and enjoy your meals elsewhere, now you’re banned.”
Chef Mountain has been living in Australia for seven years after leaving the UK.
He has appeared on cookery shows Great British Menu and Chef Race UK v US.
