Dr. Michael Moseley explained the morning routine he uses, including a simple exercise he says can boost weight loss. Dr. Moseley called the routine “life-changing.”
The details are included in his new book Just one thingbased on his podcast of the same name, where Dr. Moseley said one of his favorite tips is to get out and take a brisk walk within two hours of waking up.
He said getting your heart rate up with low-impact exercise early in the day helps regulate your appetite, reports Daily recordhelping with weight loss.
Not only will a morning walk burn calories, Dr. Moseley says it will help you stop snacking during the day.
Writing in Just One Thing, Michael said: “As well as waking you up, bright outdoor light helps reset your body clock, which in turn helps regulate hunger, mood, body temperature and all sorts of other important bodily processes.”
He added: “Light levels outdoors are at least 10 times brighter than inside your home, and when that light hits sensors at the back of your eyes, it sends messages to a part of your brain called the pituitary gland. telling it to stop producing the hormone melatonin.
Melatonin is a hormone your body produces to help you sleep. Michael recommends walking for at least 30 minutes, but says any morning walk is better than none.
He said: “As well as exposing you to lots of light, any walk – short, long, fast or slow – will strengthen muscles and bones, reduce joint and muscle pain, burn a few calories and boost energy levels.”
Michael also uses a seasonal affective disorder lamp if he can’t go out into the daylight, which produces enough rays to mimic daylight and stimulate the hormones that make you happy and sleep well.
Michael tells her that one thing he likes to do is take regular cold showers for the “short, sharp shock” it gives the nervous system.
And he makes sure to do other exercises every morning, like push-ups, which he says can strengthen the brain as well as the muscles.
