Lizzo’s Belfast based wardrobe team

Five fashionistas from Northern Ireland have been “bitzo for Lisso”.

They helped the American singer with her costumes for her concert in Belfast this week and added more glitz and glamor to the Grammy winner’s wardrobe ahead of her Glastonbury concert.

Along with his many backup dancers, Lizzo dazzled in many different outfits at Ormeau Park on Thursday as part of the Belsonic line-up.

“Liso is like weird royalty,” Becky Bellamy told BBC News NI.

Becky was part of the creative team responsible for Lizzo’s wardrobe in Belfast.

“There are no words to describe someone of that status coming up, who is so supportive of the queer community and the trans community, and it really brings people together.

“(Fashion designer) Marie Nancarrow had been doing wardrobe for events like this for years and was asked to put together a team of five.

“There had to be two runners and wardrobe assistants and then three tailors.”

Conor Kerr said the team was doing everything from “washing trousers” to helping prepare outfits and accessories to go on stage for both the Belfast concert and Lizzo’s performance at Glastonbury this weekend.

The team worked 15 hours from nine in the morning to midnight for the show.

Describing her work on a vinyl dress worn by Lizzo, Becky said: “It took me about two hours to steam all the layers, and Lizzo wore it in probably less than five minutes.”

They also helped the backup artists with their many “quick changes” during the concert.

“I always knew Lizzo was well known for her looks and bringing that type of energy to the stage, but she had a lot of outfit changes,” Connor added.

“It was a great thing to stand on stage and see it all happen,” Becky said.

“She really brings people together”

The pair run Another World Belfast, a social enterprise that provides support to marginalized groups in the city, particularly those from the LGBTQ+ community.

Connor described it as “really inspiring” to see young people in the audience, especially those from more rural areas, able to express themselves.

Becky Bellamy said the singer considered herself ‘weird royalty’

While Lizzo did not disappoint fans in Ormeau Park, the singer was left feeling disappointed after making unsuccessful attempts to try a local delicacy.

“Belfast, I am angry with you all. I’m mad at everybody because all I wanted was a bag of spices – that’s all I wanted,” she said in Posts on TikTok.

She visited a restaurant in Belfast that she had seen described on TikTok as “the best spice bags”, only to find it closed.

Lizzo made a second attempt on the day of her show, only to be told it wouldn’t open until 4pm BST.

“I have to get ready for my show at five,” she said.

“I’m leaving Belfast now after my show and I haven’t received my bag of spices from this restaurant I’ve been stalking for the last two days.”
