The 14-year-old boy who died after a “playground incident” at a school in West Lothian has been locally named as Hamdan Aslam.

Emergency services were called to St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn, West Lothian, on Tuesday afternoon.

The teenager was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment, but died a short time later.

In a statement, Bathgate Mosque in West Lothian said: “During this difficult time, the family needs our support and prayers.

“We ask Allah to grant Hamdan the highest rank in Jannah and give the family sabr (patience) to bear this loss. It is crucial that we refrain from making assumptions and speculations regarding this tragedy.”

Police Scotland said the investigation into the incident was “ongoing”.

Police sources previously said that the death occurred after a “playground incident” between two pupils.

The incident is not believed to be part of an “online challenge” amid speculation on social media within the community that it was a so-called “tap out” game.

Sky News understands that “there is no criminality” involved, however, the police Scotland he has declined to comment while the investigation continues.

The school, where singer Lewis Capaldi was a student, previously confirmed that there was an “isolated incident” inside the grounds.

Principal Andrew Sharkey said students and staff were receiving support.

Local politicians expressed their condolences, including MSP Fiona Hyslop, who tweeted: “My condolences go out to the family and friends of the pupil who died at St Kentigern’s Academy in my constituency.

“I hope those closest to him have the privacy they deserve at this tragic time. I am confident that the students and staff will be supported during this time.”

The parish church of St John the Baptist, in Fauldhouse, posted on Facebook: “Can you please keep in your thoughts and prayers the family and friends of young pupil S3 who sadly passed away after an incident at St Kentigern’s Academy?”

Police Scotland said they were alerted to the incident around 1:20pm on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the force added: “Officers were called on a report of concern for a 14-year-old boy at a school in the Bathgate area.

“He was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment, but died a short time later.

“His family have been informed and investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances of death.”
