Metrolink: Line damage causes trams to be cancelled
Damage to overhead lines at Victoria

Overhead lines were found to be damaged after a thunderstorm hit the area on Sunday

Greater Manchester’s tram network has been hit by cancellations and delays after overhead lines were severely damaged.

Bury and Rochdale services were partially suspendedwhile other city center services also face disruption due to the failure at Manchester Victoria.

There were no trams running from Heaton Park or Bowker Vale on Sunday evening, forcing many of the thousands who had used the service to attend the Parklife festival to use bus transport or other means to get home.

The storm also caused the Heaton Park event to be interrupted briefly for safety reasons.

Manchester councilor Pat Carney told BBC Radio that people in Manchester were “really disappointed” after the disruption caused problems for both festival-goers and the annual Soccer Aid charity football match at Old Trafford.

“Of all the times this happens, it’s so unfortunate and disappointing,” he said.

He added that the council would ask regional body Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for “full information on what happened”.

They said engineers were still working to repair the damaged lines.

The disruption has seen services on the Bury line start and end at Abraham Moss and trams to Rochdale and Oldham run to Monsall.

There were also changes to some of the other Metrolink lines, with East Didsbury services terminating at Deansgate Castlefield, Manchester Airport trams stopping at Firswood and Trafford Park services only operating as far as Cornbrook.
The BBC has contacted TfGM for comment.
