Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and mourning period cost the UK government a total of £162 million, according to the Treasury.

His death on September 8, 2022 triggered 10 days of national mourning that was later followed by a state funeral on September 19.

During this period, hundreds of thousands of people made their way to London to pay their respects during his funeral at Westminster Hall.

Chief Treasury Secretary John Glen said the death of Queen Elizabeth II was a “moment of great national importance” and that the government had to ensure that surrounding events “run smoothly and with the right level of dignity, while ensuring at all times the safety and security of the public.”

A breakdown of costs provided by the government showed the Home Office paid the most, at £74m, followed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which covered £57.4m.

The Scottish government incurred costs of £18.8 million, while the Welsh government and the Northern Ireland office paid around £2 million each.

The Treasury said the Scottish and Welsh governments and the Northern Ireland office were fully reimbursed for their respective costs.

Queen Elizabeth’s funeral drew the attendance of world leaders including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron.

On May 6, the King was crowned in Westminster Abbey alongside the Queen.

Following the event, the King said the nation’s support was “the greatest coronation gift possible.”

In a written message, he said: “We thank each and every one of you.”

“Knowing that we have your support and encouragement, and witnessing your kindness expressed in so many different ways, has been the greatest crowning gift possible as we now dedicate our lives to serving the people of the UK, the realms and the community.” said the King.
