Kate Middleton and Prince William told Prince George that he would be king one day

Princess Kate and Prince William have told Prince George that he will be king one day, according to a royal family friend.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had chosen to wait to tell their eldest son that he would be a monarch in order to protect him during his childhood.

However, as the young royal’s tenth birthday approached, Kate and William decided to tell George about his role in the royal family.

A family friend told The Sun: “William and Kate wanted to protect the children as much as possible, especially from the concept of them being royal and all that entails.

Princess Kate and Prince William have told Prince George that he will be king one day, according to a royal family friend.

“Actually, George didn’t really know he was royal. The Queen and then-Prince Charles were seen through the lens of family – as great-grandmother ‘Gan-Gan’ and grandfather ‘Dad’ – rather than their royal roles.

“At events like Trooping the Colour, George was told that Gan-Gan was a very special lady, very popular and well-loved and so the whole family was with her to give her a standing ovation in the balcony.

“(They told him) everything ‘royal’, like the picture of the then monarch and her three heirs at Buckingham Palace, was done for her.

“They didn’t tell him until fairly recently that he was going to be king one day.”

The friend continued: “It was a delicate balance to protect her childhood and innocence.

“But it also meant explaining to him that his grandfather and his father are going to die one day, which is a very difficult concept for any child.

“It’s also very difficult for what it means to his siblings, Charlotte and Louis.”

On Friday, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children made a surprise visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo.
